Enrichment

Enrichment at LGCA

Our students are trained up to be engaged participants in our global society, as noted in our purpose statement: LGCA is a community, rooted in the teachings of Jesus, where all students are loved, challenged, and equipped to be purposeful contributors in their communities. As we love, challenge, and equip every child at LGCA, we endeavor to create opportunities for their God-given talents to be demonstrated. To that end, in addition to athletic enrichment programs we offer at LGCA, we also offer a number of academic enrichment programs.

Stem Club - (Grades 4 & 5)

This club is intended to be a valuable tool for students’ learning and a great way to engage students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, all while building a 21st century skill set. It involves students in the learning process and stresses critical thinking and problem solving. The activities focus on collaboration, team building, communication, helping peers, and finding a passion for knowledge. Ultimately, we see this as another opportunity to challenge and equip our students to find ways to make a difference in the world. Through fun, exciting activities that promote teamwork, challenge expectations and boost confidence, students hone their ability to make informed decisions. STEM Club is the perfect opportunity for students to have fun while learning!

Students in Grade 6 and grade 7 are offered the opportunity to participate in the Peer Mediator program. This is designed to build and teach conflict resolution and inclusion techniques. We aim to develop students’ skills as ‘conflict managers’ with their younger, and same age peers. Students attend training workshops that lead them through the various stages of conflict, and learn strategies that will enable them to de-escalate situations that arise in real life. Some of the skills the students take away include: recognizing constructive versus destructive conflict mediation, different levels of intervention, inclusion, and the traits of a positive leader. Students will ultimately put their skills into practice during assigned lunch and recess duty on a rotational basis.

Peer Mentorship - (Grades 6 & 7)

Odyssey of the Mind Club (Grades 6 & 7)

Odyssey of the Mind (OM™) teaches students how to develop and use their natural creativity to become problem-solvers. Imagine being faced with a problem that requires an original solution. It can be frightening. Now imagine not being afraid to solve that problem – that is what OM members learn. This skill and self-confidence will carry over to all areas of their lives. OM brings the classroom to life as students apply what they learn and combine it with their interests and passions to solve our unique open-ended problems. OM also emphasizes teamwork, budgeting, time management, public speaking, and so much more. This international program is designed to help students at all learning levels grow as individual learners, grow as team members, and to reach their full potential.

Junior Achievement is a Worldwide non-profit organization for youth established in 1919 and JABC was founded in the 1950s. In this program, students learn how a company is set up and managed from the ground up. They will also develop leadership and teamwork skills, as well as responsibility. Students will also earn service hours while learning valuable skills. This program has also helped students gain a deeper understanding of their career goals. By focusing on financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship, we aim to inspire, prepare and empower our students for lifelong success.

The World Scholar’s Cup was created to be a celebration of the joy of learning. This group is dedicated to inclusive enrichment for students of all backgrounds. It’s a tournament that is rewarding for all teams and provides enrichment opportunities to motivate students not just to demonstrate their existing strengths, but to discover new ones. Each year our LGCA WSC Club takes at least one team to compete in the Vancouver round here locally. students will compete in 4 different areas: the Scholar’s Bowl, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge, and the Team Debate.
