November News - Grade 3

November News

Dear Parents,

It was a pleasure to meet with you during Parent/Teacher conferences.  We welcome and value your feedback as the year progresses.  We are well into the swing of things in all of our subjects.  Here are some of the things we will be focussing on this month:

Language Arts (Reading/Writing)-  We have just begun our Guided Reading groups.  In our small groups, we will be practicing our decoding, predicting and visualizing skills.

Writing: We would love to see the Grade 3s become confident and prolific writers! With that in mind, we are beginning a new writing routine where we go through these steps: PLAN, DRAFT and REVISE, each week. Students will be able to plan ideas, share and develop their ideas, then write and edit.  About once a month, we will go through a publishing process where a ‘final’ copy will be written. We will learn to keep in mind that when we write, we write for an audience and need to convey information, ideas and/or entertain the reader!

Math- In the next two weeks, we will begin our unit on Place Value skills (NUMBER SENSE). We will be practicing counting numbers using a number line to compare and round numbers. We will learn how to group and count by 10’s and 100’s, and find ordinal numbers. Students have been using Base Ten materials to model 2 digit and 3 digit numbers and recording the number in a place value chart. They will be exploring ways to represent numbers and investigating and describing numbers to 1000.  Place Value is the foundation to number sense.  A solid understanding of place value is essential to develop a strong number sense and an understanding of all computational methods. These skills will come in handy in many mathematical situations as it directly enhances skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Therefore, we will keep at working on improving quick recall of these skills throughout the school year.

Data Management: Students are also learning how to collect and organize information in a tally chart, pictograph, and bar graph in our Data Management unit.

Social Studies- We will be working on our Haida group projects (note taking, paragraph writing, putting together a poster board display, making a model and presenting information to the class)

Bible:  Students have just completed a unit on Bible Heroes. This month we will be focussing on God`s peace as well as on who we are in the eyes of God.  Our memory verse this month is:

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

                                                                                                                                                                                    Philippians 4:7

Students should practice this verse at home so that they will be ready to say it during chapel at the end of the month.  Stay tuned for the exact date.

Health and Career Education (HCE): We are continuing to study how to recognize our own feelings and emotions, as well of the feelings and emotions of others.  We are currently participating in the Zones of Regulation program.  Please read the attached information regarding the program.

Halloween Candy: Some of you may have received treats this Halloween, however, it is appreciated if you limit your child to one small treat at school per day.  More than that may lead to unnecessary hyperactivity, among other things. Thank you in advance!  Did we mention, thank you in advance?!

We have started learning the songs for the school Christmas play this week.  Students will be presenting `Christmas in Black and White`` on December 14th.  Stay tuned for more information on ticket sales and costume needs.
